Birding the long entry road can be good, there is a small wetlands on the left side of the road. A scope is helpful for Pond 1 near the parking area, you can drop your scope at your car to walk the rest of the site. The levy trails around the perimeter of the site are more than 4 miles, with marshy trails between each pond as well, and through the grasslands. There are lots of varied habitats to explore - ponds, marshes, small woodlands, grasslands, telephone poles and everything in between. The raised dirt trails between the ponds can be thick and wet, boots recommended.
eBird counts 321 species recorded here, which makes it one of the best birding hotspots in the DFW area. Several rarities have been recorded here over the years.
It’s big. You can walk more than 4 miles around the perimeter, and explore several types of habitats for a huge variety of species. Easy to lose track of time and find yourself on the other side of the site close to 4:30pm when the staff will be looking for you to lock the gate. Feral hogs and coyotes are present.
The outer perimeter levies take you over most of the habitat. The center dirt road is bordered by grasslands on each side. Each pond is bordered by marshy trails, which can be wet, but you can walk between them to peek into the ponds and reeds.
