McCamey WTP stands for Water Treatment Plant--which is another term for the city's sewage treatment or wastewater facilities. Call the city offices (432-652-3333) to be given permission to access the water treatment plant. Please do not try to access the WTP without first obtaining permission. We don't want other birders to lose access because we didn't check in with the city first. The gates are closed when the roads are muddy. The sewage ponds/water treatment plant is open Monday through Friday, 09:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 16:00 hours (9 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 to 4 p.m.)
One birder commented that they birded the WTP from the back of the "old horse race track/stable" to see into the ponds.
A scope would be most helpful, especially for distant viewing, when the gates are closed.
The data are limited from eBird reports (no checklists are reported to eBird in January, March or April for example) so any chance other birders have to submit checklists from this spot would be much appreciated for filling in details. In the winter and through to the month of May, look for migrant waterfowl. Again, with limited data, shorebirds are only reported in May, August and September. One presumes there could still be some shorebirds present in other months.
The reeds/cattails are very high around both eastern cells. Along the trail between these two, openings have been made in the reeds providing clear views of each cell. 11/15/23 the western cell was very low but ducks were present and no reeds.
No real trails. There is a road/trail between the north and south eastern cells. Another between the western cell and the southern eastern cell. Neither are on top of the levee
