Tips for Birding

The birding is probably reasonably good at any time but may be more productive during migration. Walk the ring road in the early morning or later in the day.

Birds of Interest

Most of the species thus far observed on the property are characteristic of the area, generally. Open field and thicket species such as Eastern Meadowlark and Field Sparrow have been observed.

About this Location

The former Millbrook Correctional Centre property is located on the north side of CR 21 on the western outskirts of the Village of Millbrook.  Opened as the Millbrook Reformatory in 1957, the Millbrook Provincial Correctional Centre was decommissioned in 2003 and the buildings were demolished in 2015. The 42 ha property sits atop a drumlin and is a mosaic of mowed fields, mixed forest, shrub thickets and ornamental plantings associated with the former facility.

Although the property is posted ‘No Trespassing’ at the locked entrance gate, there doesn’t seem to be any enforcement, and at least for the time being tobogganing, cross-country skiers, dog walkers, birders, and other outdoor enthusiasts seem to be tolerated. There is room to park several vehicles at the gate and access is gained by simply walking around the gate. There is a paved ring road just over a kilometre in length that leads up to the site of the former facility buildings.
