A spotting scope is highly recommended to scan the mudflats behind the chain link fencing and to observe distant waders roosting within John Heinz NWR during dusks in August.
A variety of herons and migratory shorebirds are currently expected here beginning in the later portions of summer & extending into early fall. In early spring, Wilson’s Snipe have been observed in the mudflats. Occasionally, waterfowl such as Common Mergansers and American Black Ducks can be seen in the ponds or flying over John Heinz.
