Texas State Highway 18 at the Pecos River Granfalls, Texas
This is one place in West Texas to get a few waterbirds and is probably worth a stop. While one might not get a lot of species, some of the species can be unusual--Northern Pintail, Mallard, Gadwall, Green-winged Teal and Gray Catbird—in what is otherwise a dry, dusty, desert-like county.
Lesser and Common Nighthawk have been reported here in June. There is one report of a Wilson's Snipe in March though this hotspot is seriously lacking in data. A Gray Catbird in November triggered a rare bird flag in eBird. Please consider stopping here whenever you are in the area to add to the data for this hotspot.
The bridge across the Pecos River on Texas State Highway 18 North allows for access to the river at this location. It is possible to drive off the highway, down to the river and cross under the bridge . It is also possible to walk a short distance upriver for additional viewpoints.
For county listers, the Pecos River is the dividing line between Ward and Pecos Counties. So birds seen on the west (south) side of the river will be in Pecos County.
