About this Location

Head Tide Dam is a historic dam on the Sheepscot River in the Head Tide Historic District of Alna, built more than a hundred years ago to support several local mills.

The Head Tide Historic District was once a thriving industrial center with several mills powered by the Sheepscot River. The district covers both sides of the river, where the remnants of the dams and mills can still be seen. The district also features some of the oldest buildings in Alna, such as the Head Tide Church (1838), the Jewett General Store (1884), and the Spring House (1787). The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

The area is a popular location for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and viewing wildlife.
