Tips for Birding

One of the unique habitats for the Trans-Pecos region are extensive galleries of large cottonwood trees. They provide nesting for many raptors, woodpeckers and passerines. This particular segment of road running along Limpia Creek has the largest accessible galleries in the Davis Mountains. There are 5 paved and a few dirt pullouts along this stretch. Unfortunately the largest trees are near the two dirt pullouts.

  • The stand of trees that are 2.5-3 miles from the TX-17 intersection is historical for nesting Common Black Hawk, Zone-tailed Hawk and Gray Hawk. Look for the birds sitting or flying near the trees along the creek. Also other foothill specialties can be found on the hillsides on the south side of TX-118.
