If you’re in the Mora area, take the opportunity to park at Saint Vrain’s mill just north of the river, west of NM-434, and bird the area back to the bridge. Remember, birds seen here should not be listed for the cemetery hotspot; they will need to be listed for a personal hotspot as there is no hotspot for the community of Mora itself. Please describe your birding location or route in the checklist comments.
Brewer’s and Red-winged Blackbird, Northern Rough-winged and Violet-Green Swallow, Black-billed Magpie
Santa Gertrudes Cemetery is also known as Saint Gertrudes Cemetery.
Although this hotspot is named for the town’s Catholic cemetery, after turning off NM-94 you actually pass around, if not through, the Presbyterian cemetery as you make your way north to the Catholic cemetery. There is a third cemetery, the small Saint Vrain family cemetery, northwest of these two cemeteries, which might also be included in the hotspot, but access is unclear. There are a few conifers in the Presbyterian cemetery which bear examining before you head north toward the hotspot map pin.
The dirt road north passes a small pond (possibly a stock tank) on the west, with a fence between the road and that property. You are likely to see both Brewer’s and Red-winged Blackbirds in vegetation ringing the pond; nevertheless, be sure to examine the trees near here for other species. Gates to the east and north into the Santa Gertrudes Cemetery are typically unlocked, though closed. Before the north gate is a parking or turn-around area maybe an eighth, no more than a fifth, of a mile from where you turned off NM-94. You can drive through that gateway a bit further, to an enclosed area at the north end of the cemetery; yet, it is just as convenient to walk. Please do not leave any gates open upon departure.
