The Davis Mountains Preserve is closed to the pubilc except for a handful of open weekends a year. Check out when the Open Days Events occur. The Nature Conservancy established the 32,844-acre Davis Mountains Preserve to protect one of three of Texas's unique sky islands--a cooler, wetter higher elevation surrounded by arid lowland desert. The Preserve includes Mount Livermore (Old Baldy), the fifth highest peak in Texas at 8,378 feet. It contains 7 peaks over 7,000 feet. Also subsequent land acquisitions combine with conservation easements on adjoining properties makes for a total of 110,000 acres of the Davis Mountains region protected under The Nature Conservancy's conservation.
