Lake Palestine--Dam (Cherokee Co. portion) & Spillway area

County Road 3504 Bullard, TX 75757

Tips for Birding

First park behind the ominous sign and scope the lake.  Proceed to the parking area on right and observe the dam and spillway.  Drive down and park at the fisherman’s access.  The rocky shallows along the river are favored by shorebirds.  If you have time the fisherman’s access north of the sign is worth a quick stop.

About this Location

As you approach the first thing you see is a sign declaring Private Road - Travel at your own risk.  This is a standard disclaimer from the water authority.  It’s open to the public.

There’s a parking area on the right about 200 yards beyond the sign from which you can view the dam and the pool below the spillway.  During high water release the gate just past this parking may be closed as the water may be over the roadway. If it’s open you can drive across the bridge below the dam an a short distance beyond, as the county line follows the next channel to the west.
