Bill Witt City Park

Bill Witt City Park

Tips for Birding

Birding can be most fruitful on the perimeters of the park. The edge of the mowed area by the dog park and kickball fields can have sparrows, kinglets, buntings, and warblers. The Hike & Bike Trail offers views of kingfishers and some passerines bathing or drinking in the effluage. Following heavy rainfall, the soccer fields flood and attract many shorebirds and waterfowl.

Birds of Interest

Shorebirds such as Upland, Least, Semipalmated, Western, Solitary, Stilt, and Buff-breasted Sandpiper, both Yellowlegs, dowitchers, Long-billed Curlew, Marbled Godwit, and Black-necked Stilt.

Passerines such as Pine Warbler, kinglets, yellowthroat, sparrows, shrikes, Painted Bunting, and flycatchers.

About this Location

Bill Witt City Park sits on the former site of the Rodd Naval Auxiliary Air Station (Rodd Field). Little of the runways or hangars still exist, but the property has been turned into a welcoming city park with soccer, baseball, & kickball fields, a splash pad, a hike & bike trail, and a dog park. The park grounds are primarily open grassy fields and a drainage ditch parallels the hike & bike trail on the west side of the park.

Notable Trails

The Hike & Bike trail begins within the park at the dead end of Bill Witt Dr. Following it west and north will provide views of kingfishers and wading birds in the drainage canal.
