Tips for Birding

Parking - There is no parking at this location. There is a small area to pull off of MacArthur Blvd NW to park around this location: 38°56'20.2"N 77°06'42.8"W. This pull off does have a gate that is almost always locked, so driving though the loop shown on Google Maps is not possible. Please see the street view image for this hotspot as a reference.

Birding Areas - From your vehicle, walk down the paved loop looking for flyovers, birds in trees, waterfowl on the reservoir. In the summer, Swallows can be found at the bridge.

Birds of Interest

Cliff Swallows can be seen in other locations in DC; this location tends to be fairly reliable for this species from April to July.

Although it is rarely as productive as the nearby Georgetown Reservoir, it is reliable for common mergansers in winter and other ducks do drop in, occasionally.

Red-tailed hawks, chipping sparrows, bluebirds, and both vultures can be seen here in summer when they become scarce in other parts of NW DC.

About this Location

One of the DC-based reservoirs owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It is not open to the public. However, it has a chain link fence allowing birders to view wildlife.
