National Road Commons Park, a newly-constructed downtown connector park, is now home to Springfield’s celebrated Madonna of the Trail. Originally commissioned by the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, twelve such Madonna statues were placed along the National Old Trails Road extending from Maryland to California, in each of the 12 states the road passed through. Springfield’s Madonna was the first to be dedicated on July 4th of 1928.
