Tips for Birding

This Hotspot is meant only for old, historic checklist from the past that cannot now be segregated into two lists, one for the coast west of Highway 1 and the other for interior habitats east of Highway 1. Such old lists from the past will be mapped to the parking lots on Highway 1, but that mismap birds like Pacific Wrens in Redwood Canyons inland. Please do not use this Hotspot for current lists.

For current birding, please understand that there are now Hotspots, each restricted to specific habitats, that will better map the birds you enter to the right habitat. There are two Hotspots west of Highway 1 to enter birds from the coast: Garrapata SP north coast (Soberanes Pt. & north; west of Hwy 1 only), and Garrapata SP south coast (Granite Canyon to Garrapata Creek bridge). The dividing line is the first pull-out on the ocean side south of Soberanes Pt.  There is just one Hotspot for all the trails and habitats east of Highway 1: Garrapata SP interior (Soberanes Cr. or Rocky Ridge trails). At the moment, Rocky Ridge trail is closed due to storm damage (see photos above) but it is expected that it will eventually be restored, and re-create the entire interior loop.  Currently, only the Soberanes Creek trail is open, following Soberanes Creek inland to redwood groves through chaparral habitat, and riparian willow habitat along the creek.

Please change eBird checklists when you cross a border into a different Hotspot.  Highway 1 is the dividing line between the coastal Hotspots and the interior Hotspot.

Birds of Interest

Historic lists only, please. See this section of the three Hotspots to use for current birding.

About this Location

Garrapata SP covers 2,939 acres, the vast majority of which is rugged inland hills, east of Highway 1, with hiking trails in chaparral, willow-lined creeks, and stands of Coast Redwood. Garrapata SP also includes miles of coastline, with creek mouths and offshore islets, that are west of Highway 1.This old "original" Hotspot included all of the State Park, both east and west of Highway 1, but because the habitats change quickly away from the coast, it mismaps quite a number of birds. Please do not use this Hotspot unless you have a historic list for many years ago that cannot be segregated into two checklists.
