Tips for Birding

The road to this lake is on the east side so morning viewing might be best. It might be possible to walk or drive around to the west side but that is not known for sure at this time (input from visiting birders would be much appreciated).

There is a marshy area below the dam that is easily accessible and holding ponds across the road 

Birds of Interest

Snow Goose, Ross's Goose, Greater White-fronted Goose have all been reported here. Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal are fairly common at this hotspot in the winter. Other winter waterfowl include Northern Shoveler, Gadwall, American Wigeon, Mallard, Northern Pintail, Canvasback, Redhead, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead and Ruddy Duck. Pied-billed Grebe, Sora, American Coot, Sandhill Crane are also usually found here in the winter. April-May water birds include Black-necked Stilt Wilson's Phalarope, Spotted and Solitary Sandpiper, Baird's and Least Sandpipers. There are summertime reports of Black-crowned Night Heron, Snowy Egret and Green Heron.

Northern Harrier is a winter raptor while Mississippi Kite is a summer bird. Ash-throated and Scissor-tailed Flycatchers and Western Kingbird can be found here in the summer. Lark Sparrow is generally reliable at this location in the summer with the winter providing Fox, White-crowned, Song and Lincoln's Sparrows in fairly reliable numbers.

Rounding out summertime birds are Orchard and Bullock's Orioles, Painted Bunting, Blue Grosbeak and Dickcissel.
