About this Location

Founded in 1901, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has one of the largest college campuses in the United States. It owns 9,178 acres and is the second largest land-holding university in California. It is the oldest of three polytechnics in the California State University system.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo comprises the main campus core, nearby agricultural, livestock, and ranch lands, freshwater reservoirs, and extended properties into coastal foothills that are accessible by foot. The main campus can be good for birding in the appropriate season and the list of recorded bird species includes some rarities. Greenbelts, gardens, and landscaped areas contain several native and exotic trees. This map of The Trees of Cal Poly is available as a guide to specific trees planted around campus.

Campus parking is limited and parking fees are enforced. Parking on weekdays on campus requires a permit that can be purchased at the kiosk as you enter campus on Grand Ave. There are also a limited number of pay stations on campus. Traffic is very heavy and parking is almost non-existent when school is in session. Parking permits are not required on the weekend or campus holidays. Once parked, access to most locations is only available on foot.
