Tips for Birding

When submitting eBird observations at Cape Island Wildlife Management Area, it is most helpful to start a new checklist for each hotspot in the wildlife management area. Use the general hotspot when you have a checklist that includes multiple locations or if no other hotspot or personal location is appropriate for your sightings.

About this Location

The Cape Island Wildlife Management Area is managed by the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife. These areas are designated as Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) and are focused on fish and wildlife habitat, with recreational activities such as fishing, hunting, birding, wildlife viewing, photography, cross-country skiing, hiking, and mountain biking also encouraged. While not part of the state's public parks and forests system, these multi-use sites provide valuable natural spaces for both people and wildlife.

The Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey worked to restore habitat at an old golf course in lower Cape May County. The project focused on reforesting many of the old fairways at the site, renamed as Cape Island Wildlife Management Area. Around 300 native tree seedlings were planted. All of the species planted benefit wildlife by providing food and cover. The trees increase biodiversity and reduce fragmentation of forested habitat.
