About this Location

Swan Lake is a shallow muddy lake fringed with bulrushes (Typha sp.), which makes the water murky but highly suitable to waterfowl.  The lake forms part of a Wildlife Management Area which is within a major provincial migration corridor and is an essential resting and feeding stop for migratory birds, such as the American Pelican and Trumpeter swan, in spring, late summer and fall. It is also considered to be regionally significant site for nesting. Over 200 bird species occur in the area. The lake and surrounding uplands have local significance for small mammals as well as reptiles and amphibians, providing habitat for numerous wildlife and plant species-at-risk and supporting numerous ecological communities at risk.  The surrounding grasslands are home to a number of small mammals and reptiles, drawing in Birds of Prey year-round. You can also expect to find Great Blue Herons from the nearby rookery making their way to feed in this fertile habitat.
