The Penobscot River is a major river with a total length of 264 miles when including its branches. It is the longest river entirely in Maine and drains nearly one-third of the state's area. The river has a rich history and cultural significance for the Penobscot people, who still live on Indian Island near its mouth. The river offers diverse opportunities for outdoor recreation, such as whitewater rafting, canoeing, fishing, and wildlife viewing.
