Namozine Creek at Baltimore Road

Namozine Creek at Baltimore Road

The eBird hotspots point to the north (Amelia county) and south (Dinwiddie county) sides of this swamp. The location is on VA-622 (Baltimore Road), 4.0 miles north of U.S. 460. There are two options for parking. South of the area but quite close to the swamp, on the west side of the road, there is a gated dirt road (a rough track) with room for one car to park in front of the gate. The dirt road appears to be little used, and if you are on the road nearby viewing the swamp, you can easily come move your vehicle if needed. Or, about 600 yards north of the area, there is a wide gravel area at a side road, with room for several cars to park.

Tips for Birding

This is a wonderfully quiet road. During one hour-long visit on a weekday, just 3 vehicles drove by. There is almost no ambient artificial noise, so an approaching vehicle is audible at a distance. The road is straight here. It is fairly safe to view the swamp from the road, and step off it when a car passes.

Nearby, there is a brushy old field on Baltimore Road (VA-622) about 3.5 miles south, almost to U.S. 460. That field has had Yellow-breasted Chat and Prairie Warbler.

Birds of Interest

Yellow-throated, Red-eyed, and White-eyed Vireo; Yellow-breasted Chat; Ovenbird, Hooded Warbler, American Redstart, Northern Parula, Common Yellowthroat, Pine Warbler, Prothonotary Warbler, and Yellow-throated Warbler.
