Birds of Interest

Watch for American Dipper in the streams. At higher elevations, look for Spruce Grouse and American Pipit (near Roman Nose Lake). Listen for Hermit, Swainson’s, and Varied Thrushes (breed in the forest). Good area for American Redstart, Red-eyed Vireo, and raptors. Boreal Chickadee have been found in this area of the Selkirks.

DIRECTIONS: On US 95, N of Bonners Ferry, turn W on Riverside Ave—this Rd is just S of the bridge crossing the Kootenai River; go W 7 mi to West Side Rd; R (N) on West Side Rd then L on FR 633 (Myrtle Creek Rd; second dirt road on L past the Kootenai NWR and Myrtle Creek); W on FR 633 until it meets FR 661; S on FR 661 (over Cook’s Pass); E onto FR 402 and continue down Snow Creek drainage to CR 13 (Lion’s Den Rd; Kootenai NWR sign on L); Turn L onto CR 13 and follow until back to Riverside Ave (District 15/CR 18). A side trip to Roman Nose Lake may be reached by turning off FR 661 at junction with FR 402/FR 1007. Allow at least 2 hours of travel time for this side trip.
