Birds of Interest

Similar to other State Game Lands (SGL) in this region, SGL 116 is a good spot to find breeding warblers. A gas pipeline right-of-way cuts through the middle of SGL 116 which created a forest edge effect which attracts early successional species such as Field Sparrows, Indigo Bunting, etc.

About this Location

State Game Lands #116, consists of 3,218.7 acres, located in northern Pike County south of Lackawaxen. The terrain is rolling and predominantly forested. Primary game species are bear, deer, turkey, and grouse.

Similar to other State Game Lands in this region, there are no official trails at SGL 116. This SGL has fairly rugged terrain, very dense thickets of Mountain Laurel, and an expansive network of wetlands. If one is attempting to go birding at SGL 116 they should prepare themselves with a very good pair of boots (knee high recommended if not essential), bug spray, tick protection (physical or chemical), adequate food and water, and be prepared for the physical exhaustion of working through the terrain and (depending on where you go) unavoidable dense thickets of Mountain Laurel. Keep in mind that as with most (if not all) State Game Lands in Pennsylvania, hunting is very popular here. It is highly advisable that you familiarize yourself with the local hunting seasons and accordingly wear large amounts of blaze orange for your safety.
