Tips for Birding

The Maine Birding Trail website has tips for birding Pemaquid Point. It is an especially good spot to check after a strong easterly storm. During spring and fall migration, disoriented and windblown nocturnal migrants frequently concentrate on peninsulas such as Pemaquid. If you are here at dawn, it can be very exciting to watch birds flying in from the ocean; they typically are exhausted and can be easily observed at close range. A scope will enhance your view of birds on the ocean.

Birds of Interest

Like many other long peninsulas extending into the open ocean, this is a fine spot to look for seabirds, waterfowl, and windblown vagrants year-round and in migration. These are places where alcids, pelagic species, and migrant songbirds are regularly spotted.

About this Location

Pemaquid Point is one of many places along the coast where the mainland extends into the Atlantic Ocean. The depiction representing the state of Maine on the U.S. quarter is that of Pemaquid Point, though a comparison with the real thing suggests that artistic license was taken with the design. Pemaquid is a throwback to Maine’s rustic resort heritage. The Pemaquid Hotel is over a century old and gives the honest impression of being a summer destination, not a stopover.
