Birds of Interest

Peregrine Falcons nest on the cliff on Mazinaw Lake across from the park store. An excellent mix of breeding songbirds is present in summer with close to twenty species of nesting warblers.

About this Location

Bon Echo is one of the larger and more popular Ontario Parks. It's split down the middle by Hwy 41, which serves as the access route to the park, either from the south (Hwy 7 via Kaladar) or the north. The main campground, beaches, and park gate/office/store and other park amenities are located on the east side of Hwy 41 and access to the west side of the highway is through an underpass access at the main park gate.

The park operates from early May to just after Thanksgiving (check the park website for exact dates each year). A large campground is located on both sides of the highway, although the Hardwood Hills Campground on the west side of the highway experienced significant damage during a storm in spring 2022 and remains closed as of fall 2023. Some paddle-in sites are available on Joeperry Lake and a small number of cabins are available on Bon Echo Lake.

The beaches on Mazinaw Lake are very popular in the summer and canoe/kayak rentals are available in the park on Mazinaw Lake. Regular ferry rides to the far side of Mazinaw Lake, either to tower the famous pictographs on the cliff, or to access the cliff hiking trail, are available for purchase in the park as well.

From a birding perspective, Bon Echo offers typical Canadian Shield birding - with a very good mix of breeding songbirds in the mixed forests.
