About this Location

Cutler Naval Station was a very low frequency (VLF) shore radio station that provided one-way communication to submarines of the Navy's Atlantic Fleet, both on the surface and submerged. The station had a huge antenna system that covered a peninsula of nearly 3,000 acres on the Maine coast at Machias Bay. The station became operational in 1961 and was staffed by Navy personnel until 2000. After that, it was operated by civilians until it was closed due to water pollution by chemicals from the station's power plant.
