About this Location

This stretch of the Snake River is part of an Important Bird Area (IBA). The IBA contains some 126 bird species, hosts a large breeding population of Bald Eagle, and was rated the most unique and biodiverse ecosystem in Idaho by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The South Fork of the Snake River stretches some 60 miles from Palisades Dam to its confluence with the Henrys Fork. This area may be one of the last strongholds for the the Yellow-billed Cuckoo in Idaho, a species of greatest conservation need.

DIRECTIONS: In Swan Valley, at intersection of ID 31/US 26, zero odometer; W on US 26 (to Idaho Falls)l L (SW) on Snake River Rd (mi 3.4); L into Spring Ck boat landing; return to Snake River Rd, zero odometer, turn L (SE) and follow rd as it parallels the river; mi 1.1 stay L at intersection; mi 1.3 turnout on L for Fall Creek waterfall, park here to bird area; continue driving to bird any of the upcoming campgrounds; pass Falls Campground at mi 2.3, group camping site at mi 2.6, and primitive campgrounds at mi 6.4, 7.5, and 8.9; at mi 11.9 the Yeaman Creek Trail is on your right - stop and bird; at mi 12.1, 2 CHOICES: (1) turn L for bridge over Snake River and US 26, continue to mi 13.8 to bird Riverside Park Campground and then follow to mi 14.2 to return to US 26; or (2) turn R and go 0.2 mi to Calamity Campground and boat ramp to bird the area.
