Dutch Gap area

(approximate) 251 Henricus Park Road Chester, Virginia 23836

Tips for Birding

There are arguably four or more distinct areas to bird here. From north to south, there is (1) the Boat Landing; (2) Henricus Road, driving along the edge of a marsh, first north-to-south, then west-to-east; (3) the River Bluff Trail, heading east to the James River; and (4) the long series of trails heading southwest, beginning with the Dutch Gap Trail.

About this Location

The Dutch Gap area involves several different organizations with different purposes. These include Chesterfield County, the Henricus Foundation, the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, and the Dominion Energy corporation.

Despite the significant environmental impacts of the surrounding industrial developments (particularly the adjoining property of Dominion Energy), Dutch Gap is one of the premier birding hot spots in southeastern Virginia. It is a perennial favorite of local and regional birders.
