The trail passes through second growth and follows a stream for much of its route. There are many woodpecker friendly snags, and the undergrowth attracts the usual suspects year-round. The path provides a pleasant link to the deeper woods of the Collegial Woods hotspot nearby.

The Joes Run Recreational Trail is a .9-mile asphalt trail that meanders through mature woodland and open meadows along Joe’s Run creek and connects the Zanesville Middle School with Adams Circle. The trail connects with the Collegial Woods trail on the Ohio University Zanesville campus. In addition to serving as a pedestrian corridor linking the Zanesville communities’ primary and secondary educational institutions, the trail offers wonderful opportunities for wildlife viewing. White-tailed deer, Red-tailed Hawks, and even the occasional Bald Eagle are common sights for trail users.

 Wheelchair access is good for the first few hundred yards at the east end of the trail and provides a good place to get views of some of the older trees in the area. A hill leading down to the stream would provide a challenge to anyone in a wheelchair though, as it is fairly steep.
