About this Location

The Federal Hill Trails. These trails cover about 4.5 miles of loop trails that lead to two vista points: one at the summit of the Vista Trail and another called Henry's View along the Henry's View Trail. You can enjoy views of the surrounding hills and forests, as well as wildlife and birdwatching. The trails are also open for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Be aware that hunting is allowed on some parts of the land during hunting season, so wear blaze orange for safety. You can park on either side of Federal Hill Road at the Milford-Hollis town line. There is no fee or restroom at the trailhead.

Another attraction near the Federal Hill Trails is the Federal Hill Lookout Tower, which is a 0.7-mile out-and-back hike on a gravel road. The tower is an old fire tower that offers panoramic views of the area. However, the tower is also rusty, rickety, and littered with trash and glass, so be careful if you decide to climb it. The parking area for the tower is very small and can only fit a few cars. The tower hike is more challenging than the trails, but still doable for most hikers.
