Winegar Park

About this Location

This is mostly forested bottom land with oxbows and borders the Cedar River. It can be buggy so be prepared. There are excellent mowed trails. There is a boat ramp into the Cedar River, which is well marked from Benton-Buchanan Road. The Sportsman's Atlas indicates there are picnic areas, pit toilets, and electricity. These amenities are not obvious if they are even there. There is a cabin for organized groups.
Access to this park is very poorly marked. From Vinton, take Hwy 150 North 5 miles. Turn left onto V71. Go North 5 miles. Turn left onto Benton-Buchanan Rd. Go 3 miles. First you will see a sign to Tobin Cabin Area. Turn left onto this small lane if you wish to explore this area. When you are done, go back out to Benton-Buchanan Road. Turn left. There is a sign to Winegar Lake. Go slowly and watch for a small red "911" address sign of 2318. Turn left onto this narrow lane. There is a large parking area at the end of the lane.
This is 467 acres of bottom land, woods, oxbows, a small lake and it borders the Cedar River.
