Tips for Birding

There are several notable birding areas around campus.

  • The "front campus" green space between Hilltop Dr. and SR-59 contains many well-established deciduous and coniferous trees and a large stand of dense shrubs near the fashion building; it hosts warblers, vireos, thrushes, and sparrows during spring migration.
  • The woodlot adjacent to the outdoor track and Cunningham Hall hosts passerines during spring migration.
  • Water retention ponds along Campus Center Dr., near parking lots R-12 and S-42, seasonally have wetland species and occasional shorebirds during migration.
  • The fields, forests, and prairie grass reserve around the student recreation center and Allerton Sports Complex, along Campus Center Dr.

Birds of Interest

There are a number of Peregrine Falcon observations around the library dating back to 2013.
