Tips for Birding

A spotting scope is helpful for distant birds toward the back of the pasture. There is a pond in the southeast corner that will attract ducks, egrets, and herons, but there is no access to the pond. On clear days during morning hours, birding may be difficult as you look directly east into the sun. Afternoon hours will eliminate this issue, but bird diversity may be less.

Birds of Interest

Waterfowl, shorebirds, gulls, raptors, and migrating swallows. Gulls will often circle overhead and drop into the pond to bathe or rest on the margins. Look for Horned Lark, Say's Phoebe, Savannah Sparrow, and American Pipit in the pasture areas. Snow and Ross's Geese have also been present. Common Raven and Peregrine Falcon are uncommon species around the ag fields west of Santa Maria. Burrowing Owl has been recorded in the ground squirrel mounds. Rarities include Sandhill Crane, Iceland Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Yellow-headed Blackbird, and Purple Martin.

About this Location

Black Road Pasture is located on Black Road just north of the massive Windset Farms greenhouse facility. The pasture is private property - do not trespass. Bird only from outside the fence line. Be cautious of passing traffic and pull well off the road, but watch for a soft shoulder after rain. There is a gate to the pasture which has a wider area to park but do not block the gate.

Black Road pasture is a seasonal Hotspot that is best in winter and spring only after heavy rains when water collects in a low depression next to the road. The size of the pond will fluctuate depending on the amount of rainfall and runoff. This flooded pasture will attract many shorebirds and gulls which can be seen relatively close to the road for a few weeks each year.
