Tips for Birding

Muskingum River Road is popular among local birders during the winter months, when waterfowl tend to gather in the Muskingum River and when woodland birds are easy to spot in the naked trees. The best river views are at a sharp bend in the river about a mile north of Devola Lock and Dam. There are some convenient flat spots and pullouts between the road and railroad tracks. Another good spot for waterfowl is at Rainbow Creek, where there is a dirt parking area large enough to accommodate several vehicles. North of Rainbow Creek, where rows of trees border fields, good raptors can sometimes be seen, and a couple of corn cribs off the side of the road are a hotspot for a variety of sparrow species.
