Tips for Birding

This hotspot's name refers to the community of Mesilla Park, whose streets are lined with mature trees of various species, pecan likely being the most common. The eBird map pin is located near the southwest corner of the community, at McDowell and Conway. A drive or stroll through the neighborhood offers pleasant birding, but do not miss the park adjacent to the old school, now a recreation center. Somewhat confusingly, the park is often referred to as Mesilla Park. Its small parking lot is on the south side, off Bell Avenue, though you may also park under the evergreens on the west side, off Orange Avenue.

About this Location

Mesilla Park is a neighborhood located on the south side of Las Cruces. Residents of Mesilla founded the community through a land company in 1887, shortly after Las Cruces became the county seat of Doña Ana County. At the time, it was an independent settlement, though it was eventually annexed by Las Cruces. The neighborhood adjoins University Park, the site of New Mexico State University, and it grew after the university was founded in 1889.
