Tips for Birding

If you carefully keep your bird records by county, be sure to use the specific hotspots in this area so that the birds will be assigned to the proper county. Most of Northwood Lake is in Rockingham County as is the eBird hotspot. The westernmost arm of the lake is in Merrimack County.

About this Location

Northwood Lake covers 653 acres and spans two counties: Rockingham and Merrimack. The lake is fed by several streams and drains into the Little Suncook River, which eventually joins the Merrimack River. Northwood Lake is popular for fishing, boating, swimming, and wildlife watching. The Northwood Lake Watershed Association is a group of residents who work to preserve and protect the quality of the lake and its surroundings.

Northwood Lake has a free boat launch (located next to the town beach off US-4 across from the Northwood Country Market), a commercial marine, a town beach that is available to non-residents, and a Boy Scout camp. Most of the lake’s shoreline is developed, consisting primarily of single-family camps and homes. A restaurant and several businesses are located near the lake along US-4 and a trailer park exists on the shoreline at Northwood Narrows.
