South Pond - Chittenden (10 acres)

Green Mountain National Forest Chittenden, Vermont 05737

About this Location

South Pond is located near the Chittenden Reservoir and the Long Trail, and can be accessed by the South Pond Trail, a 1.5-mile hike that climbs 764 feet from the Round Robin Trailhead. South Pond is surrounded by a large wetland area that provides habitat for wildlife and plants. The pond itself is shallow, only 10-12 feet deep. South Pond was once the site of a beautiful cabin that was planned to be part of the Vermont Huts network, but it was tragically burned down in 2018 by unknown arsonists.

South Pond (10 acres) is a site for the Vermont LoonWatch annual survey. Birders are encouraged to volunteer as often and whenever they are able. See Join LoonWatch for details.
