Please note that the Ohio-West Virginia border is near the Ohio side of the Ohio River at this location. There are separate hotspots in West Virginia for reporting birds seen in the river pool or below the Pike Island Dam. When reporting birds from the Ohio hotspot use multiple incomplete checklists as described below.
Ohio eBird reviewers ask that birders keep precise state and county lists. When you are at a location where you see birds across a state or county line, we ask that you keep two incomplete birding lists, one for each side of the border.
When keeping separate checklists for different sides of a border, please follow these rules:
The Pike Island locks were constructed from 1959-63, and were opened in November 1963. The lock chambers lie on the West Virginia side of the Ohio River along WV-2, just north of the Warwood district of the city of Wheeling. The villages of Yorkville, site of a large steel plant, and Tiltonsville are across the river in Ohio.
