Tips for Birding

Heritage Park offers trails that run along the Great Miami River. Besides walking trails both in and outside of tree cover, the park also has multiple ball fields and a play area for children near the back parking lot. In the spring, we walk the trails that follow the river’s edge in hopes of finding warblers, vireos, and orioles. All sightings are able to be observed from the trails, looking in and up into the trees. If you’re not so much the walking type, many birds can be viewed from the parking lot along the tree line. A spotting scope can be helpful for viewing birds on the river.

Overall, this park was both enjoyable and productive! During our visit, it really wasn’t overcrowded but I can see how it could be during ball games or family events. The only caution I would mention is that parts of the trail that run along the riverside are sandy and even slightly eroded over the bank. Caution is advised after rough weather where the bank could have possibly collapsed.

Birds of Interest

Prothonotary, Blackpoll, and Yellow Warblers along with Common Yellowthroat are often seen. Baltimore Orioles and Warbling Vireos were very abundant and very talkative! Northern Rough-Winged Swallows soared over the river and perched on fallen trees along the bank. Blue Gray Gnatcatchers, Cardinals, House, and Carolina Wrens, Turkey and Black Vultures, Killdeer, and Indigo Buntings are all often along the trails.

About this Location

Heritage Park is flat, has one mile of river frontage, and is home to an abundance of wildlife species. The river frontage provides for both water recreational opportunities and serves as an easily accessible ramp for the Fire and EMS Department during water rescue emergencies. The flat topography allows for both active sports fields and passive recreational activities to coexist with the greenspace environment of the Great Miami River. The land is reported to be the site of Fort Coleraine, the scene of a fierce Indian attack on Colerain settlers in the 1790s.

Heritage Park offers 4 NCAA regulation-sized baseball fields (grass infields on two), an 18-hole disc golf course, a picnic shelter, playground, canoe access ramp onto the Great Miami River, over 1 mile of walking trails, Ecolab, and a rain garden.
