Hawthorne WMA

About this Location

In extreme northeast Mahaska Co., about 1.5 miles south of Barnes City. The main entrance is east off V-13 (Urbana Ave.), 1/4 mile north of G-17(120th St.), and difficult to spot. Where the the main entrance road forks, both roads lead to parking on the water, and together these cover scoping for the entire north arm and the middle third of the lake. The remaining east part of the lake is viewable from Victoria Ave. crossing the water: Return to V-13 and drive south one mile past G-17 to 130th St. on the east (left). Proceed east on 130th for 1.5 miles to Victoria Ave. and turn north (left). Victoria crosses the lake at 3/4 of a mile. Returning to V-13 from here is much simpler by retracing your route than by continuing north toward Barnes City.
