Tips for Birding

With numerous winding roads and a variety of habitats, Crown Hill Cemetery is worth a birding visit.

This cemetery is ideal for both car birding and walking. A 2-hour visit covered 5 miles of winding and crisscrossing roads with a minimal amount of walking. The roads and grounds are not that well maintained, but they are certainly accessible.

Crown Hill’s website shows limited hours, but these are office hours. It is suggested that one call first to determine when one can enter the cemetery, since those hours may be different.

Birds of Interest

While this is a cemetery where one finds manicured areas dotted with American Robins, Brown-headed Cowbirds, and European Starlings, this cemetery is surrounded by wooded areas and shrubby edges which are home to Eastern Towhee, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Wood Thrush, Red-eyed Vireo, and House Wren.

A summer’s day visit netted 31 species, which included Eastern Bluebird, Grey Catbird, numerous Chipping Sparrows, Killdeer, a pair of Red-tailed Hawks, Tree, Barn, and Northern Rough-winged Swallows, a Great Blue Heron, Canada Geese, and much more. There are water features and a stream on the property.
