This location, including the Lowell Riverwalk, provides excellent views from above the Merrimack River. Parking is available behind the Tsongas Arena at the parking lot closest to the river. If this lot is closed for an event, there is metered street parking on Perkins Street or Hall Street.

Walk the Riverwalk from directly behind the Tsongas Arena upriver until you reach the University of Massachusetts Lowell dorm buildings. The path provides good views, both up and down the river, of the bend the river takes at this spot. Follow the Riverwalk about 1 mile, 2 miles round trip. Bringing a scope is optional, it will aid you in seeking out birds on the far side of the river but you will always have to carry it.

For the best view, when the paths go behind the Lelacheur Park (ballpark), take the rock path to the sandy beach along the river. This provides the best view of the bend in the river.

The bend in the river is very well known as a resting spot in the winter for Common Goldeneyes, Common Mergansers, Mallards, and all common gull species. In the summer, the rocks in the middle of the river can have Spotted Sandpipers, Night-Herons, Great Blue Herons, and Double-crested Cormorants.

The Merrimack River is a 117-mile-long river in the northeastern United States. It rises at the confluence of the Pemigewasset and Winnipesaukee rivers in Franklin, New Hampshire, flows southward into Massachusetts, and then flows northeast until it empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Newburyport. From the point where the Merrimack turns northeast in Lowell, Massachusetts onward, the Massachusetts–New Hampshire border is roughly calculated as the line three miles north of the river.
