Tips for Birding

The grounds of the cemetery are full of coniferous and deciduous trees that draw a variety of birds. As this is an active cemetery, a birder may need to be gracious and accept burial/cremation brochures from cemetery staff.

Birds of Interest

White-winged Crossbills were found here in 2009 and 2012.

About this Location

Rose Hill Burial Park is one of the area’s largest and most distinguished cemeteries. Although the park was officially founded in the 1920s, there are areas in it where burials took place even earlier. The name Rose Hill was derived from the landscaping and nursery service originally located on the property.

Rose Hill was one of the first cemeteries to set up an endowment care fund, ensuring that its grounds would be forever attended to, even if no more burials took place. The largest private cemetery in Akron, many of Akron’s most prominent citizens have been laid to rest on its serene acres, including many of Akron’s industrial and religious leaders and even a Medal of Honor recipient.

As the park continues to grow, sections have been added to provide families of certain organizations and religions with exclusive areas that highlight their service or faith. Rose Hill has sections dedicated to those who served in the military, members of the Masons and the Order of the Eastern Star, and people of the Jewish faith. In the early 1980s, Rose Hill began to offer the use of its mausoleum complex.
