About this Location

Clay Pit Pond is a popular spot for bird watching, as it attracts a variety of waterfowl, shorebirds, and songbirds throughout the year. The pond is surrounded by a wooded trail accessible from the parking lot of the Clay Pit Pond Playground on Underwood Street. The pond is open to the public from dawn to dusk, and there is no admission fee.

Clay Pit Pond, located between Concord Avenue and Belmont High School, was created in 1933 when Wellington Brook was redirected to flood the former site of a brickyard that operated from 1888 to 1926. The brickyard was owned by the Parry brothers and later by the New England Brick Company, and it produced millions of bricks from the blue clay found in the area. The pond is now part of the drainage system for Belmont.
