Scan flocks of resting birds on the beach, or look for seabirds on the nearshore ocean and shorebirds on the beach. This area may be best when flow in the creek is lower and a small lagoon forms.
Terns, skimmers, gulls, and shorebirds often gather at the small lagoon which forms when the creek does not reach the ocean.
Lower Mission Creek itself is channelized with concrete and doesn't have much riparian vegetation or bird life (especially compared to less-modified reaches further upstream). However, much of the year (when flow is lower, i.e. not after rain events) the creek forms a sand berm which disconnects it from reaching the ocean and creates a small pond just inside of the beach. This pond and its shores attract birds, especially roosting gulls, terns, and often skimmers.
