About this Location

Named after the Christy Family, who established the Christy Knife Company in 1891 in Fremont, Ohio, this 147-acre property consists of woodlands and wetland areas. Visitors can enjoy a walk along the Muskellunge Creek or catch a glimpse of an active heron rookery. The Cabin, built in 1936 by the Christy family and the Kiwanis Club of Fremont is available for youth group overnights.

The preserve is managed by the Sandusky County Park District.

The rolling landscape supports a variety of natural communities including forested and emergent wetlands, mesic and upland woods, grasslands, and scrub-shrub habitats.

The Preserve was donated by D. LaMar Christy Jr. and was formerly owned by multiple generations of the Christy family. The Christy Farm historically was used to cultivate crops, raise cattle, and nurture workhorses and racehorses.

Since farming operations ceased in the 1980s, the natural hardwood deciduous wetland forests slowly have been regaining their hold over the Muskellunge Creek Valley.
