The Holy Cross Cemetery was dedicated in 1868 with 150 acres of burial lots. An additional area of 43 acres was acquired in 1915, south of Lynn Street, after the sale of 15 acres from the northern section near Eastern Avenue. The cemetery now sits on approximately 180 acres. The earliest death date is 1868 and is still in use today. In 2002 there were over 500,000 headstones.
