About this Location

Renwick Avenue is located off West Ocean Ave/Highway 246 west of the city of Lompoc. Turn north from West Ocean Ave. onto Renwick Ave. and cross over the railroad tracks. Bird the length of the road and check the willow-riparian habitat at the end.

The Renwick Avenue Hotspot is a short public road bordering agriculture fields near the south entrance into Vandenberg SFB. It is known primarily as a spot for watching flocks of sparrows, pipits, blackbirds, and Horned Larks in fall and winter. Longspurs have been recorded here in sparrow flocks. The presence of these birds is highly dependent on the current variety of crops being grown and harvesting activities. The normally dry field to the west can be very good for sparrows and pipits in fall and winter, especially after the field has been tilled or when short grass is available. At other times, flocks are largely absent. Blackbirds will sometimes gather in the tilled ag fields to the east. Renwick Avenue is also a good spot for observing raptors. There is a willow-riparian row near the entrance to the road across the railroad tracks and more extensive willow-riparian habitat at the north end of the road bordering the Santa Ynez River. Swainson's Thrush is a local breeder along the river.

Do not trespass into the agriculture fields or cross over the fence line at the river. Do not attempt to enter Vandenberg SFB property. It is best to avoid birding here if harvesting activity is taking place right next to Renwick Ave.
