Tips for Birding

Parking for Nason Park is a dirt pull off just after the bridge and guardrail on the south side of Stevens Boulevard when coming from the east, or just before the guard rail when arriving from the west.

Following the maintenance path takes you along a patch of woods that is good for migrants as this is one of the few spots in the general area with a patch of trees. The path opens up to a mowed field and after a .2 mile walk, you arrive at the park’s best feature a large lake.

The best thing about this park is it is not often visited, so the birds on and around it are bothered much less by nonbirders than at many other lakes in the area. Additionally, few birders check this location unlike some of the more popular locations in the area that get checked often, so if something unusual shows up you will have a better chance at finding the bird yourself.

The park, in general, has a nice mix of habitats in a fairly small area. A scope would be helpful for checking the opposite end of the reservoir, although there is access to the water and you could walk around the lake if desired. The only drawback to the park is that it is along the freeway so it is noisy making ear-birding more difficult.
