Tips for Birding

This area is best in winter when other areas of Otter Creek and other waterbodies are frozen. Watch for ducks particularly at the intersection of Dorr Drive and River Street where East Creek enters the Otter and is rarely if ever frozen. Bald Eagles have been spotted along this stretch.

Drive slowly, but watch for traffic, between the Ripley Bridge (across from the Rutland Recreation Center at the intersection of Clement Road, Ripley Road and Dorr Drive) and the River Street Bridge (intersection of Dorr Drive and River Street). There are no pull-offs, but there is a small parking area next to the River Street Bridge.

In a good winter irruption year, check the fruit trees around the Rutland Recreation Center (old College of St. Joseph campus) for Pine Grosbeaks and Bohemian Waxwings.
