About this Location

This is the largest all-solar-powered campground in the United States. The Forest Service constructed it in cooperation with the Bureau of Reclamation. Cholla Recreation Site is located on Theodore Roosevelt Lake, central Arizona’s largest lake. There are 206 camp units with shade ramadas, fire rings with grills, picnic tables, and potable water hydrants. Toilets and showers are located throughout the camp loops, playgrounds, paved boat launch, and fish cleaning station. Cholla RV dump station across the highway is open Thursday and Friday from 12 pm to 2 pm.

This site is 5 miles north of Roosevelt Dam. From Mesa: Take AZ-87/Beeline Highway north for about 60 miles to its junction with AZ-188. Turn right and follow AZ-188 south for 28 miles to the site.

From the Globe area: Take AZ-188 north for 30 miles to its junction with AZ-188. Continue on AZ-188 across the bridge for 6 miles to the site.

Migratory waterfowl (including Canada geese) and raptors (including bald eagles and osprey) use the lake during the fall and winter. Small isolated islands and coves offer outstanding opportunities for camping and relaxing in the unique Sonoran Desert.

From Mesa: Take AZ-87 (Beeline Highway) north for about 60 miles to the junction of AZ-188. Turn right and follow AZ-188 for 26 miles to the lake. The entire route is paved.

From Globe area: Take AZ-188 northwest 27 miles to the lake. The entire route is paved.
